The donation of a R490 000 vehicle has enabled a Fordsburg, Gauteng-based charitable organization to appreciably step up its humanitarian and relief endeavors as the socio-economic aftermath effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and attendant restrictions really begin to bite.

Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) sets out to improve the lives of this country’s less fortunate communities. Its welfare department is responsible for the disbursement of the donations and contributions with which it is entrusted to deserving recipients, often in under-developed and rugged rural areas.

The vehicle donation was made by the South African Muslim Charitable Trust (SAMCT), enabling JUSA personnel to make regular trips to implement or inspect humanitarian projects in which it is integrally involved.

Speaking at a recent event to celebrate the official handover of the new vehicle, SAMCT representative, Mr. Farouk Bayat, said: “JUSA has for many years embarked upon campaigns which see the inputs of its extensive donor base being implemented through carefully targeted initiatives for the benefit of deserving beneficiaries.”

“This would simply not be possible without mobility and the ability to traverse rugged terrain in
order to execute the organization’s campaigns effectively.”

The organization’s efforts are largely education-based and include school library refurbishments, classroom construction, the installation of sickrooms, equipping schools with soup kitchens, and the construction of ablution facilities to replace hazardous pit latrines. Other initiatives include the distribution of stationery, food, sanitary supplies, and winter warmth items, as well as the sinking of boreholes and installation of plumbing works for communities.

“In view of the number and diversity of the organization’s development endeavours, the South African Muslim Charitable Trust was pleased to be in a position to provide an appropriate vehicle in order to ensure the continuance and expansion of JUSA’s most laudable humanitarian activities,” said Mr. Bayat.

The SAMCT was created in 2008, the result of a partnership between Old Mutual Unit Trusts and Al Baraka Bank, for the creation, marketing, and distribution of a suite of Shariah Funds. This has ensured that the SAMCT is the beneficiary of this Shariah suite of funds, enabling it to provide funding, services and other resources for the improvement of the lives of the vulnerable, deprived and disadvantaged. It has been singularly successful in delivering sizeable solutions throughout South Africa – irrespective of race or religion – and continues to work to support needy organizations in the fields of social development, poverty alleviation, healthcare, and education.

“Education is key, especially in deprived rural areas, and the work of JUSA must be regarded as an effective investment in the future, while its massive food response in the wake of the pandemic has, in many instances, been a real lifesaver. In view of its valiant relief work, the SAMCT is proud to have been able to ensure the organization’s ability to reach and deal with each and every one of its humanitarian outreach projects,” Mr. Bayat concluded.
