A transportation crisis faced by a Bluff, Durban facility dedicated to creating a safe haven for abandoned babies has been averted with a game-changing donation of a vehicle by the South African Muslim Charitable Trust (SAMCT).
The Journey of Hope Baby Home, established in 2023, provides a nurturing environment for abandoned and vulnerable infants, so assisting to strengthen family bonding. Since its recent inception, the home has already played a pivotal role in raising 12 children until they found their forever families.
Commenting on the donation of a vehicle, valued at R256 312, to Journey of Hope Baby Home, SAMCT representative, Mr Gaff Osman, said: “Child abandonment in South Africa has reached crisis point and the need for suitably resourced safe havens for affected infants is massive.”
He added that the Journey of Hope Baby Home urgently required a dedicated vehicle to ensure safe and reliable transportation for medical appointments, court visits and essential outings.
“Appropriate transport is a critical aspect of the home’s overall operations. However, its original transportation resources were severely limited and the home struggled to accommodate all those in its charge, creating immense logistical challenges and restrictions on the experiences it was able to offer the children in its care,” added Mr Osman.
Journey of Hope Baby Home takes great pride in its unwavering commitment to the welfare of infants. The organisation works tirelessly to ensure that each child feels valued and cherished, regarding it imperative to provide them with the best possible start in life. This is a sanctuary where love and care converge to create a nurturing environment for abandoned infants. It is more than a shelter; it’s a place where every child, regardless of their circumstances, is able to experience the warmth, affection and security of a loving family that they so rightfully deserve.
Mr Osman said: “Upon learning of the home’s transportation predicament, the SAMCT was keen to offer financial assistance, sponsoring a dedicated vehicle, suited to the home’s specific needs. This will, in turn, enhance access to healthcare and facilitate recreational activities crucial for child development.”
The SAMCT was created in 2008, the result of a partnership between Old Mutual Unit Trusts and Al Baraka Bank, for the creation, marketing and distribution of a suite of Shariah Funds. The organisation provides funding, services and other resources to improve the lives of the vulnerable, deprived and disadvantaged. It has successfully delivered sizeable assistance solutions throughout South Africa – irrespective of race or religion – and continues to work to support needy organisations in the fields of healthcare, social development, poverty alleviation and education. The organisation has long served as a pivotal conduit for the channelling of funding, vital services, and resources to approved public benefit organisations, and remains committed to catalysing positive change and creating a lasting impact on the development and upliftment of, especially, disadvantaged individuals
and communities. Its funds are distributed to help improve the health and development of deserving people and organisations, irrespective of race or religion.
“Our support, through the provision of an appropriate vehicle, will go some way to impacting the well-being of the infants in the care of Journey of Hope Baby Home for years to come, ensuring they thrive in a secure, loving environment. From medical appointments to court visits, having access to reliable transportation will now ensure that the children will be better able to access essential services and opportunities which will, ultimately, contribute to their growth and development,” Mr Osman stressed.
